Introduction
This study reviewed several articles to look at the effects of glucosamine sulfate or chondroitin sulfate in patients with knee osteoarthritis.
Osteoarthritis – is when protective cartilage between joints begins to break down.
Articular cartilage – covers the ends of bones where they attach to form joints. Healthy joints allow bones to smoothly glide over each other. Damage to articular cartilage can be caused by normal wear and tear overtime or injury.

Methods
Scientists had to identify qualified studies and data.
They looked at dose of glucosamine sulfate or chondroitin sulfate, length of follow-up and joint-space narrowing (JSN, reducing gap between the joint).
Results

mg – milligram
Significant – are results large enough to matter
Conclusion
Supplementing with glucosamine sulfate or chondroitin sulfate was found to delay knee osteoarthritis after 2-3 years of supplementation (refer to table above for specifics).
Reflection
The studies they analyzed were for a long period of time, this is necessary in establishing the benefits of these supplements.
Glucosamine sulfate or chondroitin sulfate seem to be effective in preventing/slowing the progression of knee osteoarthritis.
*It was noted from other studies that other forms of glucosamine, such as glucosamine hydrochloride (HCL) may not be as effective as glucosamine sulfate for osteoarthritis symptoms.
You can take either glucosamine sulfate or chondroitin sulfate for the prevention/delay of osteoarthritis.
Osteoarthritis can be a natural phenomenon that occurs over time or can be caused by injury. It is important to take preventative measures due to its long treatment duration with these supplements.
There are many websites/places it can be purchased.
*Be sure to purchase the sulfate form and not the hydrochloride (HCL) form (studies have reported that HCL do not provide the same benefits).
Glucosamine sulfate

Chondroitin sulfate

*Before consuming supplements, consult with a physician, individuals can be affected differently.
